LO4: Evaluation of the episode

Production process
First of all we assigned Job roles to each person in the group, this was to make sure everybody knew what they were doing in order to have an organised group. These Job roles were pre-production, Production and post production. The pre-production roles was mostly paper work to make sure the filming runs smoothly and everything was in check. These were jobs such as Script writing, Call Sheets, Recce Sheets, Risk Assessments and storyboards. Pre-production also included things like doing a mood-board of how we what the characters to be, this was to get a feel for the characters before we started filming. Pre-production also included having auditions for the actors for us to be able to choose the most suitable ones for the roles. Then there was production where the jobs included Camera operator, Lighting Operator, Set designer, director, script writer and of course the actors. My main job roles were within the pre-production roles. My first job was to do a mood-board of the characters this meant that I had to write about their personalities and their relationships to each other. I then found locations of where it is suitable to film in which is important when setting an atmosphere. I was also part of the casting team as I found suitable actors using the website "Star Now" and got in touch with them to see if they would participate in acting in the Show, I also attended the auditions to get a feel for the actors and also direct the actors in what to do. I also attended a filming in production. When in this role I help the line rehearsal to make sure the scene runs smoothly. I also helped set up the cameras to get the best shots. Finally I help with editing the final episode which meant doing the offline edit.

Key Decisions
The key decisions when planning an episode of a TV show were the location and casting. Without choosing the perfect locations or actors the episode might not create the correct atmosphere which could change the expected Genre of the show. When filming what the characters wore was also an extremely important part as this is what creates a persona on a character. While editing it was also an important part to decide which clips to use, this meant that we had to research similar TV shows to recognise the best shot types to use.

Changes
Changes were mostly made while filming; this was in order to get the best shots. When filming we changed aspects such as the lighting. This was a big problem while filming using the green screen as there we needed enough lighting to prevent showing so when it came to editing we could have an smooth background. Location of filming was also changed multiple times as some of the original ideas were not being carried out. Another problem occurred watching the footage back as we realised that there was  a big sound difference in some of the shots as the shots were going from quite to loud, another thing that we notice was hissing noise in the background of some of the clips. This means that we had to change the volumes of the clips to make them balanced using Adobe Audition.

Quality
Again the sound quality wasn't at its best which meant that we couldn't use it as it was, this meant that somebody in our group had to balance out the sound by using adobe audition. However the quality of the filming itself was really good as we used a 4K and a Sony HD camera. The quality of the shots taken were quite good as at most filming sessions we had 3 camera set up to get various angles and shot types.

Comparison
We originally research similar TV soaps to get gather an understanding of how a professional show should look. I think we achieved our goal of making it look professional as we followed the necessary guidelines from our research. In comparison to the script and storyboards we made in preproduction we stuck to them quite well.

Target Audience
The actors stuck to their character profiles really well by dressing and acting like planned. The actors also added accents to fit with where the show is set in Yorkshire. The way that the episode were presented meant the target audience is more likely to be younger women than we originally anticipated. As used a real nail bar for the episode it made the episode as a whole really realistic making it more appealing to the audience. As the script involves slight violence and bad language our show will be aired after 9pm this means that will not be failing to follow any of the legal and ethical rules and regulations

Areas for improvement

If we were to create another episode I think we should use a boom microphone this means that all the audio will be balanced and we won’t have a problem when it comes to editing in post-production. This also means that the audio will be at a higher quality which means it hopefully wouldn't have a hissing noise in the background. I think the strengths of this episode are following the ideas and script from pre-production to a high standard. I think working together as team to create the final production has being successful. We didn't rush the editing of the episode which gave us more of a high quality final piece as everything was revised fully to be perfect. We also followed the generic conventions of a TV shows. I think sound was the main weakness during production however Adobe Audition allowed us to fix this issue.

LO3: Offline Edit

Evaluation:
- The first shot in this offline is slightly shakey, this mean that we either need to change the clip completely or edit it so that the shaking is no longer noticeable.

-There is a slight lighting difference in the different shots Matt and Hannah, we can change this by changing the brightness and contrast

-Between the shots of the nail bar and the flash backs we think it would be a good idea to add an effect to show that the scene is changing to a flashback.

-In the flash back we could also slightly change the colouring of the scene as another to show that it is a flashback of the character telling a story.

- When Matt punches Reece we are going to add a punching sound effect to make it more realistic

-The audio difference between the clips needs to be fix as some shots are really loud but some are really quite so when editing we need to balance the sound

- Overall this offline edit has turned out really good and has allowed us to see which shots needto be replace and what effects we can use during this episode.

LO2: Distinction Criteria

The rushes have shown that we have followed the main coventions of a teen drama/soap opera. Some of these convention have been shown through the themes and camera work. These are camera shots such as close ups, we used these shots to capture the emotions of the characters, this is something that is needed to create an atmostphere in a scene. Shot reverse shot is another camera technique we used to show the conversations which is also a good way of creating tention and intimacy. Following Mise-en-scene is also a big part of having the conventions of a Teen drama Soap Opera. Using different lighing is a good way to reflect the mood of the scenes, this is something we used in our show as it was good to connote the tention in some scenes. Natural lighting is another convention that is used in a lot of soap operas, to create this illusion we used soft boxes. We have also added background music in the scene of the nail bar, this music is the type of music that fits with the target audience, this was to create realism as this is one of the conventions you would find in a real nail bar. The costumes worn by the characaters fit really well with the genre as these are the outfits worn by young adults reality and were purchased in the same shop as the target would purchase their own clothes. The clothes worn reflected the personalities of some of the character like Frankie as that character is sweet and happy all the time I think the floral clothes reflect this real well.

LO2: Merit Criteria

This episode we have created is fit for purpose as we have follow the main convention of a soap opera really well. As we have fit the purpose of the episode, I think the intended audience of the show would watch it as has relatable stories and characters. The proposed scheduling time was 9pm which is after watershed, I think the planning time is perfect for the show as it does have adult content that would be unable to be shown before watershed. This proposed schedule time is also good as it will aim to the time that our target audience will be still be tuning in to shows. The narrative is about relationships, friendships and drama, this fits perfectly with the theme of teenage soap opera which is what we wanted to achieve.

LO2: Rushes: Pass Criteria

This is the rushes for the nail bar.

nb27-

This clip is from the section in the nail bar when Amy has just told the girls she is pregnant. I believe the framing of this shot is really good as it captures the 3 girls sat on the chairs, however because this is such an intense and important scene regarding her pregnancy I believe a medium/close-up shots on the actors to denote their facial expressions. The audio is slightly echoing with the 3 girls on the chairs, as it isn't as clear, this will be edited in post.

nb26-
This clip is the same as nb27 but isn't the full scene. This clip isn't really usuable as there is a messes up with Bella with saying her lines before Hayleys towards the end of the clip. The actors are slightly quieter in this shot which would be edited in post production.

nb25-
The audio at the beginning of this clip is a lot better than nb27 and nb26. However the part where Hayley says 'I was just tryna lighten the mood' is a bit too quiet so possibly making this clip unusable.

nb24-
This clip is meant to go after Cheryl has finished her story with Jeremy and Carl. The framing of this clip is done well and the audio is pretty consistent all the way through. This clip runs very smoothly overall so would definitely be a possibility to use within the final product. The laughter within the clip between the girls is very natural as well.

nb23-
This clip is unusable as the girls all start laughing as soon as the acting starts. However, the framing and quality of the clip is good.

nb22-
This clip is the same part of the episode nb27/26/25. I think that the clip is fine but not as smooth as the other ones so this may not be the right one to use.

nb20-
This clip is unusable as Flic interrupts the acting due to the positioning of the frame not being correct.

nb19-
The quality and framing of this clip is perfectly fine, however it is probably not usuable as the girls get some of the lines wrong so the end isn't finished properly.

nb18-
This clip is the first scene from the nail bar. It would be fine to use, however the framing and quality of this clip isn't as good as the others above. It isn't unusable just not as good as the others.

nb16-
This clip comes after Cheryl has told part of her story between Jeremy and Carl. It can't really be used within the final episode as the girls are supposed to laugh after Cheryl says 'I can't help that all the boys want me' and without that the scene doesn't really make sense.

nb15-
This clip is a lot better than nb16, however the laughter within the scene needs to be more prominent in order for things to carry on and make sense.

nb14-
We tried something different in this clip as Bella mimicks what Hannah says, the girls laugh after and Jenny says 'Alright Frankie'. After doing this we decided that the mimicking was good but Jenny just stick with just saying 'Alright guys'.

nb13-
The framing and content of this clip is really good, therefore I think that this clip is completely fine to use.

nb11-
The framing of this clip was good as it was a good over the shoulder shot but Blaze often looks at the camera and smiles/laughs therefore meaning we can't really use this clip.

nb10-
The framing and audio quality of this clip is good and nothing really goes wrong so I think that this clip would be a good one to use.

nb9-
This is the same part of the script as nb10 however Hannah slightly messes up her lines so this clip isn't needed. Also, Jenny looks down to her magazine quite a lot so its obvious that she is looking at her lines.

nb8-
This clip is not usuable as it is just Hannah talking while the camera is still on.

nb7-
The first part of this clip is perfectly usuable, however the girls start laughing towards the end, therefore probabaly meaning that we can't use it as this part needs to be just one shot.

nb6-
This clip is unusable as the girls all start laughing due to Blaze saying her line a lot louder than before.

nb5-
This clip is when Cheryl is explaining why she got with her lads brother. The framing and acting is all completely fine in the clip therefore meaning it would be able to be used in the final product.

nb4-
This clip is the same as nb5 and again it would be good to use in the final thing.

nb3-
This clip is the first few lines of the nail bar scene, it starts off fine and the framing is good, but Blaze drops a nail polish which causes Bella to start laughing therefore meaning we can't use this clip.

nb2-
This clip could be improved in terms of the audio but I think it would be good enough to use in the final product.

nb1-
This is just a clip of us being quiet to see if there is any background noise. This obviously won't be used in any part of the final show.

Clip 1-
This clip is unusable as it just a behind shot of Bella with laughter in the background.

nb28-
This clip is perfectly fine to use as the framing and audio is good.

nb29-
This clip is probably the best out of the few we got for this section of the nail bar scene. The audio is really good and the framing is fine. Hannah pulls a face at the end but it should be fine to edit out.

nb31-
The first part of this clip can't really be used as Hayley starts laughing. Also the audio isn't as good in this clip therefore making it less likely to be used.

nb32-
The first part of this clip is really good. The quality is very good as well as the framing and audio. Also the fact that it is a close up of the conversation between Hannah and Bella works really well.

nb36-
This clip would be good to use in the final product as the framing and audio is of a fairly high quality and the acting is all good.

nb35-
This clip is just a few seconds of in between takes, it does not need to be used.

nb34-
This clip is all fine, apart from the fact that Miss made the point that Hayley needed to be a bit louder.

nb33-
This clip is slightly too loud and the end goes wrong so it can't really be used.

Rushes from Amy Ryan Scene

My role for this day was to help with line rehearsals to ensure that the scene ran smoothly. I also helped set up equipment to get the best angles and shot types.

This is a mid shot/close up of George and his reaction of finding out 'Amy' is pregnant. This clip is good as the camera is set up well and the lighting is appropriate in order to convey his emotion. We ensured there was no background noise in order to make the scene as dramatic as possible-therefore this clip is definitely fit to use in the final product.

ah4-
This is a mid close up of George and Bella acting as Amy as Ryan. It is the moment when Amy tells Ryan she is pregant. I think the positioning of the camera in this clip is very effective as we can see the reaction of both people. The lighting is also good therefore meaning that this clip can definitely be used.

ah7-
This clip is another shot of just George. The positioning and lighting is all good up until the end as George's head gets cut off when he stands up straight. Therefore this means that the start of this clip would be fine to use but the end wouldn't due to the camera positioning.

ah5-
This is a mid close up of Bella and George side profile. The lighting is slightly dark but I think that is appropriate for the content of the scene as it is quite tense. The positioning of the camera is fine as well as they are both in shot and can see their reactions clearly. The end of this clip is unusable as George hits the other camera so the filming had to stop.

ah2-
This is a clip of George coming through the kitchen door. The lighting is slightly too low and the camera positioning isn't quite right in order to capture the feeling of the scene. This clip could still be used but there are others that would be more suitable.

ah3-
This clip is a mid close up of George. The lighting and camera work is suitable for the content as it is the most tense part of the scene, therefore darker and closer footage is more suitable.

ah6-
This clip is similar to ah3. The positioning is slightly better as there is no window in the background of the shot. The lighting is again very suitable for the context of the scene, and this clip could definitely be used in the final product.

Overall evaluation:
The clips above denote our understanding of Soap Opera conventions with the use of camera angles, such as close-ups to capture emotion and tension for the audience. The location also fits with the conventions as they are based in houses, so gives a realistic/relateable feel to the audience with daily problems.

LO2: What I did while filming

Filming on Monday 6th march 2016
The Location was set at my house. When setting up to film I helped Bella Rehearse her lines. I made sure the set was appropriate for this scene and which also included keeping the continuity.  I also helped set up the equipment and helped with packing away the equipment correctly.
